History and culture of Corfu
Corfu ancient history is combined with the most recent historical monuments. As you can notice from its culture, art and architecture, Corfu was influenced by different dominations and in particular by Byzantine and Venetian Periods.

The first settlements in the island began around 775-550 b.C., when the inhabitants of the Eubea island settled there.
We hear for the first time of Corfiots at the beginning of the 730 b.C..

Corfu Old fortress
At that time, Corfiots and Corinzi where both inhabiting the same territory, near to Kanoni.
The two peoples lived in harmony and it was a period of splendor and prosperity. But, that period, did not last forever.
Peace was soon broken and the conflict between Corfiots and Corinzi continued until the end of the Peloponneso War.
Than, Corfiots allied with the Athenian (375 b.C.) and from that moment, they started to fight for their independence.
Corfiots have had to face several dominations, attacks and looting. And this is the reason why, nowadays, you can find in Corfu an extremely rich and varied culture.
Corfu art, architecture and letterature

Opera music is popular in Corfu since the Venetian Period and continue to attract both, inhabitants of the island and tourists.

Choirs and ceremonies in Corfu
During the summer season, a number of open-air concerts are organised. Especially in the Spianada Square and during the evening hours. And, you can also find choirs, through the little streets and the courtyards of the old town.
In daily hours instead, if you pay attention wandering through the picturesque alleys of the old town, you will probably see someone carrying a musical instrument bag. Or even better, you can hear them live during an official musical rehearsal or directly from an open window of their habitation.

Cinema lovers or not; what is better than an open air movie night, on a warm summer evening ? And even better, for free.
The Moonlight Cinema Caravan is an event, which takes place in summer, few times a week. Every time in a different location and with a different atmosphere. However, always with an high level of engagement.
Films are shown in English, with Greek subtitles and it is the perfect occasion for locals and tourists to meet.

Church of Saint Spyridon
Even from a spiritual point of view, Corfu is the heart of different religions which coexist in perfect harmony. The majority of Corfiots are Orthodox and only a small part of them is of Catholic religion (4%).
The Saint Patron of the island is St. Spyridon, who has always been an important figure for Corfiots, respected and adulated from them.
Corfu has been land of conflicts and foreign dominations for a very long time and St. Spyridon is the protector of the island. The hope of Corfiots.
